Jewellery made with real human hair was common in Queen Victoria's time, yet the skill has nearly vanished today. Join hairwork artist and Hair Anthropology founder Zen Hansen for a hands-on workshop introducing the foundations of table braiding. This historic technique uses long hair, weighted bobbins, and a specially designed braiding table to create intricate jewellery.

This immersive course blends craftsmanship with history as participants explore the endangered art of table-braided hairwork. Guided step by step, students will learn the foundational techniques of this historic practice while creating a bracelet using provided hair.

Working on custom-built braiding tables, participants will be introduced to proper hair bundle preparation, tying strong foundation knots, and following classic braid patterns. Students will gain an understanding of the rhythm, movement, and tension that give table-braided hairwork its distinctive strength and beauty. Throughout the session, historical context and examples will be woven into the instruction, offering insight into how this technique was practiced and valued in the past.

By the end of the workshop, each participant will leave with a finished piece and a solid grasp of the core skills needed to continue exploring table-braided hairwork on their own.

Materials
All tools and materials are provided, including ethically donated, pre-washed hair for use during class. Participants are welcome to bring their own hair to work with if they wish; it must be at least 12 inches long and approximately 1/4 inch thick. Students will also have the opportunity to purchase braiding tables, weights, and other specialized hairwork tools at a discounted rate following the workshop.

Food and Drink

Food and drink are not permitted in the lab/workshop area during instructional time. Opportunities for water breaks will be available several times during the day. For lunch, participants can bring in their own bag lunch. Alternatively, our café will also be open if participants want to purchase food during the lunch break.

Accessibility

The workshop will be in a space with bright lighting. No strong smells or sounds are expected. All areas utilized during the workshop are wheelchair accessible.
