Interpretive Programs such as bus tours and hikes begin on Saturday of the Victoria Day (May) long weekend and run until mid October. Reservations are highly recommended for these popular programs.

There are Interpretive Programs for all ages and all levels of physical ability. Age limits for each program are strictly adhered to plus some programs have footwear restrictions (no sandals or crocs).

For any outdoor programs, please make sure you bring a hat, water bottle, sturdy closed toe and heel footwear (running shoes are fine but no crocs or sandals), sunscreen and insect repellent.

Cast from the Past

 

Enter the palaeontology lab in the Park Visitor Centre/Field Station to experience some of the real behind-the-scenes work of palaeontology. Every participant gets to make an authentic fossil replica to take home.

 

Price: Adult (18 years and up)$14; Youth (7-17 years) $14

 

Length of program: 90 minutes

 

Ages: 7 years and up. Participants under the age of 14 must be accompanied by a paying adult and sorry but no participants under the age of 7 years allowed in the laboratory.

Location: Program takes place in the Park Visitor Centre at Dinosaur Provincial Park.*Parking is located just down the hill from the Visitor Centre near the concession and it is a short walk to the venue (2 minutes).

 

Join us in the Palaeo Lab and create an authentic fossil cast that will be yours to keep! Surrounded by the real tools of the trade, you will learn about the scientific work that takes a fossil from a simple curiosity to a piece of scientific evidence. You will discover how the very fossil you have replicated may have helped change our view of dinosaurs, brought new understanding about ancient environments, or even told the story of its own death.

Fossil Prospecting

 

Become a fossil hunter as you hike through the spectacular terrain of Dinosaur Provincial Park in search of dinosaur bones and other fossil remains. Ages 14 and up.

(No pets allowed on any of our park programs or inside the Park Visitor Centre. Pets are allowed in the park on leash.)


Price: $80.00 per person (includes lunch)


Length of program: 6 hours (9:30 - 3:30 pm)


Ages: Ages 14 and up. Participants between the ages of 14 and 17 must be accompanied by a paying adult.


Difficulty: Difficult hike of 5 to 8 km distance over rough terrain


Capacity: 5 people/day

Experience the excitement of fossil prospecting as you hike through the spectacular terrain of Dinosaur Provincial Park in search of dinosaur bones and other fossil remains. With an experienced park staff as your guide, you will get to prospect for fossils just like the professionals, learning the secrets of where to look and what to look for as you explore the breath- taking Alberta badlands. Each excursion will explore a different area of the Park, with the opportunity to discover something new each time. Although you will discover fossils yourself, please note that there will be no digging involved and all material will be left in the Park. Don t miss your chance to make the next big discovery! Lunch is provided.


Important Information

Ticket Pickup: Tickets must be picked up at the Information Desk in the Park Visitor Centre/Field Station about 10 minutes prior to the program starting time. All tours will leave at the scheduled time. Late arrivals will not be refunded.

For the fall season, the Park Visitor Centre may not be open in time for early ticket pickup, therefore please meet your guide outside the Visitor Centre at 9:30 a.m. (program start time).


Location: Program starts at the Park Visitor Centre, load onto a park vehicle with your guide and journey into various backcountry locations to begin your hike.


Be Prepared: There is no shade in the badlands! For your comfort and safety please bring at least 2 litres of water, sunscreen, sunglasses, hat and insect repellent. Footwear restriction; sturdy hiking boots are required. Breathable long pants and long sleeved shirt are recommended.


Alternate Program: In the event of rain, wet conditions, unsafe road conditions, or other conditions that threaten the safety and comfort of participants, programs may be cancelled. In this case a full-refund will be provided. Please call the park for weather updates (403) 378-4344 and to receive your refund.

Sunset Tour

Journey into secret areas of the Park to get the perfect photograph, or to simply soak up the natural beauty of the badlands. Taking advantage of the cooler temperatures and wonderful late afternoon/evening light you will be driven by park bus in to the Natural Preserve (restricted area).

This unique evening tour is designed especially for photographers and people looking for a quieter nature experience. Locations may include Valley of the Gold, Valley of the Castles, and Valley of the Moon. Tips and tricks for photographing the badlands will be provided.

 

No pets allowed on interpretive tour programs, in the park buses or in public buildings please.

Be prepared for your tour: for your comfort and safety please bring water, sunscreen, hat and insect repellent. Footwear restriction: Please wear closed toe and heel footwear such as hiking boots or running shoes with tred on the bottom (no sandals, crocs, flip-flops on this program).

 

Pickup your tickets during opening hours at the Park Visitor Centre but if you arrive after closing, don't worry; your park guide will have your tickets waiting for you at the park bus outside of the Visitor Centre at the program start time.

 

Please note that due to the variability of sunset times, we cannot guarantee participants will be able to photograph the actual sunset.

 

Alternate Program: In the event of rain, wet conditions, unsafe road conditions, or other conditions that threaten the safety and comfort of participants, programs may be cancelled. Fossil Safari

Get a feel for what makes Dinosaur Provincial Park so special. Join us on a safari through the badlands for a chance to observe plants, animals, and dinosaurs! Visit an "in-situ" fossil site where you can discover fossil material on the surface; no digging in this protected area! Take a close look at micro (small) fossils and learn about the diversity of animals that lived here 75 million years ago in the late Cretaceous. All ages are welcome and will enjoy this safari.


Price: Adult $15, Youth $8, Child $4, Family $38

Alternate program will tour the badlands and observe plants, animals and fossils as well as visit indoors to learn about the diversity of animals found in our UNESCO World Heritage Site. Refunds are available if visitors choose not to participate in the alternate program.

Explorer's Bus Tour

 

Experience the stunning views of the beautiful badlands from the comfort of a park tour bus and during short excursions off the bus (4 stops). You will visit an in-situ Hadrosaur dinosaur display plus you will experience the unquie geology while you learn about the explorers who have travelled to this special place over the past 100+ years.

 

Great for all ages. (No pets allowed on interpretive tour programs, in the park buses or in the Park Visitor Centre please.)


Price: Adult $15, Youth (ages 7 - 17 years) $8, Child (ages 6 years and under) $4, Family $38

At least 2 weeks notice is required before the date as we have to change out the 24 seat bus for our 19 seat wheelchair lift bus. Note: no washrooms available while on tour 1.5 hours. Also, there are rough, uneven sandstone surfaces to negotiate when off the bus at the approx. 4 stops along the way.

Parking is located in the Cretaceous Cafe/concession parking lot, just down from the Visitor Centre, (a short walk on the path) where you will load onto the park bus.

Large Group Cancellation: If you book 12 or more seats on our 24 passenger park bus, the park will require 1 full week for a refund of your tour fee.

Centrosaurus Quarry Hike

Hike through rugged (dry) streambeds and over sandstone and mudstone ridges to reach a bonebed that contains the remains of hundreds of horned dinosaurs! The Centrosaurus Quarry Hike is your best opportunity to see the unequalled concentration of dinosaur fossils that makes Dinosaur Provincial Park world famous. This former dig site is one of many horned dinosaur bonebeds found in this UNESCO World Heritage Site.

For ages 7 and up due to rough terrain, heat and program content.

No pets allowed on interpretive tour programs, in the park buses or in any public buildings please.

Price: Adult $18, Youth $8, Family $44

When you purchase a combination of 2 Adults and 2-3 Youth or 1 Adult and 3-4 Youth (up to 5 seats total) the program will find you the best rate and offer the Family pricing for 5 persons.


Length of program: 2 hours 30 minutes


Ages: Ages 7 years and up. For safety reasons, infants and toddlers are not allowed on this hike. Participants under the age of 14 must be accompanied by a paying adult.

 

Difficulty: Moderate to Difficult - 2 km distance over rough uneven ground in sometimes extreme heat. Requires good balance as some areas of sandstone and mudstone are steep and difficult to negotiate; you may have to scramble and use your hands to get up or down ridges.


Capacity: 24 people/hike. Bus capacity of 24 persons is strictly adhered to (park bus is used to reach the trailhead).

Great Badlands Hike

 

Challenge yourself with extended trek into some of the most beautiful and rugged parts of the fossil-rich badlands. Ages 10 and up. Difficult hike: please read "Difficulty Section" below.

The Great Badlands Hike is designed for the adventurous. As you are guided over steep slopes and through coulees you will learn how fossl hunters tackle the badlands in their search for dinosaur bones. You will see how modern plants and animals have adapted to survive in this challenging environment. And you cannot help but locate some dinosaur remains along the way in this, the richest site in the world for late Cretaceous fossils !

Price: Adult $29, Youth $19 (ages 10 - 17 yrs)


Length of program: 3.5 hours


Ages: Ages 10 years and up. For safety reasons infants, toddlers and young children are not allowed on this hike. Participants under the age of 14 must be accompanied by a paying adult.


Difficulty: Difficult - up to 6 km distance. This hike takes place over very uneven terrain requiring good balance and the ability to go up and down steep slopes, sometimes scrambling on your hands and knees. Also note: High exposure to sun as there is no shade available during the hike.


Capacity: 19 people/hike


Wheelchair accessible: No

Join a real excavation in this fully authentic dig and get the chance to uncover fossils never before seen by human eyes. For ages 14 and up.


Price: $180/person (includes lunch)


Length of program: 7 hours


Ages: Ages 14 years and up (participants ages 14-17 must be accompanied by a paying adult).


Difficulty: Difficult. Come prepared for sitting or kneeling on the ground, working with tools under the hot sun (there is no shade out in the badlands), and hiking in rugged terrain and slippery conditions. Footwear restrictions; wear proper hiking boots or shoes; no sandals.


Capacity: 6 people/day


Wheelchair accessible: No


This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to participate in a fully authentic dinosaur dig. With an experienced palaeontological technician as your guide, you will learn the techniques of excavating dinosaurs and work in a team to uncover fossils never before seen by human eyes. The day includes an orientation to the Park and the research project, working in a real quarry, and hiking and prospecting for new fossil finds. Your work will contribute to research going on with our partners at the Royal Tyrrell Museum. Lunch is provided.


Reservation information: Reservations can be made up until 2:00 p.m. the day before the scheduled program day.
