Buffered envelopes: Buffered storage materials are acid-free and lignin-free with a pH of around 8.5. Buffered envelopes are best suited for storage of black and white nitrate and acetate negatives and other materials that become acidic over time, such as newspaper clippings.
Unbuffered envelopes: Unbuffered storage materials are acid-free and lignin-free and contain no additional alkaline reserve to raise the pH of the storage paper or the items in contact with it. Unbuffered envelopes are best used for colour photographic prints and colour photographic negatives. They are also useful for storage of small objects (e.g., medals and ribbons).
